QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Dr Thorley has been awarded degrees of Master of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology and Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Child Psychology by the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College, University of London. He is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, a Chartered Psychologist and registered with the Health Professions Council. He is a qualified cognitive behavioural and EMDR therapist.
Dr Thorley has been a Clinical Child Psychologist for approximately 30 years and for 24 years was Consultant and Head Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychologist for the Leicestershire and Rutland Healthcare Trust and also Honorary Lecturer and Clinical Tutor at the University of Leicester. He held a previous appointment as Honorary Principal Clinical Psychologist at the Hospital for Sick Children at Great Ormond Street and was a research psychologist at the Institute of Child Health (University College, University of London). Before that, for 7 years he held research, teaching and clinical positions at the Maudsley Hospital and Institute of Psychiatry (Kings College, University of London). He was a member of the guidelines development group for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) at the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) which reported in 2009.
He has produced over 20 peer reviewed articles and book chapters on clinical child psychology, is a reviewer for several learned publications and has given many interviews for radio and television. He is a national expert on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder has and has further expertise in a wide range of mental health disorders in childhood and adolescence including autistic spectrum disorder and brain injury. Referrals are accepted from GPs and other medical staff for the the entire spectrum of child and adolescent mental health disorders. Self referrals are also accepted but a GP referral letter is usually required if health insurance funding is being sought.
Dr Thorley also provides a service to the Court, police and legal profession. He has attended court on many occasions in the role of an expert or professional witness. His particular expertise is in the area of personal injury in young people up to the age of 21 years. This also includes the assessment of mild brain injury. Dr Thorley is a skilled practitioner in the provision of therapy for clients who have suffered psychological injury resulting in Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, Adjustment Disorder and Phobic Disorders. |
